Early Years Curriculum
Country Mice Pre-School is registered by Ofsted
and therefore required to implement the Early Years Foundation
Stage (EYFS), which becomes mandatory from September 2008.
The four themes of the EYFS are:
A Unique Child:
Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient,
capable, confident and self-assured.
Positive Relationships:
Children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving
and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person
Enabling Environments:
The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s
development and learning.
Learning and Development:
Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates
and all areas of Learning and Development are equally important
and inter-connected.
These four themes express important principles underpinning effective
practice in the care, development and learning of young children.
The Early Years Foundation Stage is made up of six areas
of Learning and Development:
Personal, social and emotional:
These goals focus on children’s personal, social, emotional,
moral and spiritual development including the development of personal
values and an understanding of self and others.
Communication, language and literacy:
These goals cover the development of communication skills, including
speaking and listening and develop competence in becoming readers
and writers.
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy:
These goals cover important aspects of mathematical understanding
and provide a foundation for numeracy. They focus on achievement
through practical activities and on using and understanding language
in the development of simple mathematical ideas, such as shapes,
numbers, measurements and space.
Knowledge and understanding of the world:
These goals focus on children’s developing knowledge and understanding
of their environment, other people and features of the natural and
made world. They provide a foundation for scientific, technological,
historical and geographical learning.
Physical development:
These goals focus on children’s developing physical control,
mobility, awareness of space and manipulative skills in indoor and
outdoor environments. They include establishing positive attitudes
towards a healthy active way of life.
Creative development:
These goals focus on the development of children’s imagination
and creativity and their ability to explore, express and share ideas
and feelings through different forms of communication. |
